I spent a short 48 hours in Dallas at the Virgin Hotel Downtown and it was a perfect mid-week getaway to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Complete with tequila tasting, dinner at the Commons Club, a nightcap in Sir Richard's Flat, room service breakfast, a cabana at the Pool Club, a lively afternoon of axe throwing, and a Tex-Mex feast at Uncle Julio's, I made the most of my time.

I arrived in the early afternoon and shared an Uber to the hotel with two new Millennials in Travel friends. We were all hungry from early morning flights so we had an impromptu lunch at the Commons Club and IT. WAS. DELICIOUS. After lunch I worked from my room in the afternoon until the group met in the evening for a tequila tasting and tour of the property. Keeping in mind that Virgin is anything but ordinary, the rooms in the hotel are referred to as Chambers and I could have very happily moved into my Chamber King Room permanently. The room was spacious, beautifully decorated, and the skyline view of Downtown Dallas was a great background for my Zoom calls (Yes, I did SOME work while I was there).

We met up with our fabulous hosts from Virgin Hotels in the evening and started with a tequila tasting (featuring Casamigos, Lalo, and Patron). This was a fun Cinco de Mayo activity and really eased any potential awkwardness of meeting a group of strangers - 9 shots of tequila later and we were all pretty chatty leading into our tour of the hotel and dinner at the Commons Club.

We toured the hotel and got to look at a Grand Double Queen Chamber, a Deluxe Chamber King Suite, and the impressive Grand Chamber King Suite - complete with wrap around balcony and your very own foosball table. After our tour of the hotel, we returned to the Commons Club for a fantastic dinner prepared by the chef. There were enough courses that I lost count but we enjoyed a sampler menu served family style so we could each taste all of the dishes. If for nothing else, I’ll return for the Big Eye Tuna Crudo alone.

We ended our evening like true Virgin rock stars partying in Sir Richard’s Flat with music, drinks, and endless Dallas skyline views. The next morning, we had free time and I opted to get some work done from my bed while enjoying room service breakfast. The beds at Virgin Hotels really are #BBE - Best Bed Ever. I actually asked our hosts if they were available for purchase - they were THAT comfortable. Unfortunately I couldn’t bring one home, but I’ve booked my next Virgin Hotels stay already (Chicago in July) and I’m looking forward to the bed (among so many other things).

Most of the group opted to spend parts of the day at the beautiful pool club. We had a private cabana rental and alternated between the shade of the cabana and the sun at the pool throughout the afternoon. The Pool Club at Virgin Hotels Dallas may just have been my favorite part of the property - I could have gladly spent the entire day poolside with those skyline views. After a lazy day around the pool, we headed off site to Bad Axe Throwing for a few hours of fun. Who knew just how much fun axe throwing could be? And how many axe throwing techniques there are? Because I definitely didn’t, but it was a blast. We had some friendly competition with a variety of different games (my inappropriately named team won, but I can’t take any of the credit for that) and some free time to try different techniques. Our lumberjack instructor made all of the techniques look ridiculously easy, but we had a few natural axe throwers in our group as well (regrettably, I was not one of them). Regardless, it was a ton of fun and such a fun activity for a group!

From Bad Axe throwing, we headed to Uncle Julio’s for some delicious made-from-scratch Mexican to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and their fresh homemade tortillas and chips have ruined all others for me. It was absolutely worth it - we feasted on guacamole, queso, fajitas and, of course, margaritas. And because that wasn’t enough (it definitely WAS enough) we returned to the Pool Club at Virgin Hotels Dallas to a heaping plate of irresistible hot churros because Texas knows how to do Cinco de Mayo the right way.

This was such a perfect, quick getaway to Dallas. We had fantastic hosts at Virgin Hotels Dallas and Millennials in Travel did a great time of organizing our itinerary to include some activities, but also plenty of time to enjoy free time at the Hotel. For my fellow Michiganders - the nonstop flights from Detroit to Dallas were quick and affordable and, combined with a 3 or 4 night stay at Virgin Hotels Dallas, would be a wonderful long weekend away. I’m already counting the days until I visit Virgin Hotels Chicago in July!

A most sincere thanks to Virgin Hotels Dallas and Millennials in Travel for putting together a fantastic event.
